Narrative Feature/Sneak Previews
Against the backdrop of a child abduction case, we follow five days in the lives of: a single parent detective assigned to the case; her best friend whose determination to get pregnant keeps her from confronting her husband"s infidelity; a school teacher and his obsession with the missing child that pushes him to the edge of vigilantism; a beat cop grieving over the violent death of his wife; a recovering addict and her wheel-chair-bound brother preparing for the LA marathon; and a self-loathing African American TV writer's search for love. Honest and real throughout, some scenes - including the opening - may be a little more "real" than some viewers are accustomed to; but the payoff more than makes up for any temporary discomfort. Answers to Nothing presents a captivating web of intertwining stories exploring the bad in the best of us and the good in the worst of us. Narrative Feature/The Lounge
Duke White (Harvey Keitel) has decided to end his life. And even though they don't know it yet, Duke's oldest sons are dying themselves. But Duke's never done anything the easy way and the apples haven't fallen far from the tree. The brothers can't even make it through their father's funeral without a brawl and that's only the beginning. Reunited in the town of Niagara Falls, brothers Nuts, Cal, and Jacob approach their impending doom as differently as they've approached their lives. Disgraced boxer Nuts, played by Jason Jones ( The Daily Show, Phil the Alien ) prepares to fight one last fight. Ladies man Cal (Scott Caan) decides it's finally time to tie the knot but makes a dubious choice for his bride. And Jacob, the only responsible one, sets out to achieve his bucket list in 24 hours. Fast-paced and irreverent, A Beginner's Guide to Endings is a stylized comedy about the trials and tribulations (but mostly the trials) of family and coming to terms with one's mortality.
Narrative Feature/Special Screenings
Bottle Shock is inspired by the true story of the California wines beating the French at the infamous 1976 wine-tasting that has come to be known as the Judgment of Paris. Filmed entirely in the wine country during the summer of 2007, with four days on-location at Calistoga's Chateau Montelena, numerous days in the vineyards and along the roads in Carneros, several more days at Kunde Winery in Sonoma Valley and several more days around the Sonoma plaza (standing in as Paris). Freddy Rodriguez played wannabe winemaker Gustavo Brambila in the film. After his brief but memorable stint as Assistant Winemaker at Chateau Montelena, Gustavo left with Mike Grgich and worked with him for over 20 years at Grgich Hills Estate. Gustavo now has his own Napa-based winery: GustavoThrace. Gustavo will join Freddy on stage for a no- doubt memorable Q&A session with the audience after the screening. Narrative Feature/World Cinema
The year is 1984. On the rural East Coast of New Zealand, Thriller is changing kids' lives, just as it is all over the world. Inspired by the Oscar-nominated short film Two Cars, One Night, Boy is a hilarious and heartfelt coming-of-age tale about heroes, magic and Michael Jackson. Boy (the "name" of the title character) is a dreamer who loves Michael Jackson. Boy's other hero, his father, Alamein, is the subject of Boy's fantasies, and he imagines him as a deep-sea diver, war hero and a close relation of Michael Jackson. In reality Alamein is an inept, wannabe gangster who has been in jail for robbery. When Alamein returns home, Boy is forced to confront the man he thought he remembered. A tale of competition at its most cut-throat, Butter surveys the raw ambition of Laura Pickler (Jennifer Garner), the wife of Bob Pickler, Iowa's long-reigning champion butter carver. For 15 years, Laura has relished her high-profile role as the beautiful, loyal helpmate to her affable, artistically gifted husband. But when Bob is pressured to retire and allow someone else a chance at glory, an indignant Laura decides to enter the competition herself. She is first in line on sign-up day, only to see her odds of victory fall below 100% with the arrival of an unlikely yet formidable contender: 10-year-old Destiny, the African-American foster child of local couple Julie and Ethan. And that's not all. Bob's would-be mistress, bad-girl stripper Brooke also declares her candidacy, as does Bob's #1 fan, Carol-Ann. The Descendants follows the unpredictable journey of an American family at a crossroads. Family man Matt King (George Clooney) must re-examine his past and navigate his future when his wife is in a boating accident off Waikiki. He awkwardly attempts to repair his relationship with his daughters - eerily precocious 10 year-old Scottie and rebellious 17 year-old Alexandra - while at the same time wrestling with a decision to sell his family's land, some of the last priceless virgin parcels of tropical beach, handed down from Hawaiian royalty and missionaries. When Alexandra drops the bombshell that her mother was in the midst of a romantic fling at the time of the accident, Matt has to take a whole new look at his life, not to mention his legacy, during a week of momentous decisions. With his girls in tow, Matt embarks on a haphazard search for his wife's lover. Along the way, in encounters alternately funny, troublesome and transcendent, he realizes he's finally on course toward rebuilding his life and family.
